TASTING NOTES:

Deep amber colour. The nose is intense and finely detailed: cocoa, blond tobacco, and the noble aroma of walnut, emblematic of the old fortified wines. The palate is silky, sensuous, with a lingering elegance.

FOOD PAIRINGS:

This wine aged for several decades still surprises with its youthful energy and freshness. It pairs beautifully with hare “à la royale,” blue-veined cheeses like Roquefort, or desserts featuring chocolate and dried fruits. Open one hour in advance and enjoy at 15°C.

TERROIR AND VINE MANAGMENT:

South-facing slopes of decomposed schist and black marl. Soils are regularly tilled. Goblet-trained vines over 40 years old. Average yield: 18 hl/ha. Planting density: 3,500–4,000 vines/ha.

GRAPE VARIETIES :

90 % Grenache noir, 5% Maccabeu, 5% Carignan.

GRAPE HARVEST :

Manual harvest. Double sorting and destemming.

WINEMAKING:

One year in glass demijohns outdoors under the sun, then transferred to old 350-hl oak casks where it remains to this day, continuing its slow, graceful evolution. This exceptionally long maturation—part of the Mas Amiel signature—nurtures a wine of profound aromatic complexity and structural depth.

ROBERTPARKER.COM

The oldest vintage-dated Maury still being sold by Mas Ariel, the 1969 Maury Vintage is sweet, silky and succulent, with smoky notes that are beginning to take over from the walnut flavors still at the core. It's medium to full-bodied, and while in no immediate danger of cracking up, I don't see it getting any better from here. Drink up.

DECANTER

Velvet-textured and full of walnut, date and dried fig flavours. A harmonious wine, with dry woody and umami notes and a gentle rancio undercurrent. So concentrated and intense. Surprisingly structured, with chewy tannins and plentiful acidity and a long finish.

JANCIS ROBINSON

Smells younger than the 99! Tea and figs and something incredible tangy. Coffee. But the astounding thing is the freshness. And the spice. And the complexity. And the texture. Oolong, dates, chocolate, salt and shimmer. I want to go to bed with this wine … If the 1999 was a sculpture, the 1969 is like a national museum, a massive colonnaded building broached by marble steps and filled with light and shadows, edifices and crannies, vaults and ringing corridors and dust and treasures. It is also a wine that deserves hours and hours, silent conversations, listening and contemplation.
